The Corporate Social Responsibility Program at As You Sow is a unique force in promoting social change at major U.S. corporations. It utilizes shareholder dialogue and resolutions to challenge publicly-held companies to improve their social and environmental policies and practices.

Responsibilities:

The position involves primary research in key program areas to support ongoing dialogues with major corporations. The associate will lead research on our focus companies, including direct contact with selected companies to obtain data for studies and surveys on corporate responsibility. The associate will contribute to creating such surveys, analyzing survey answers and writing reports based on data compiled. A primary focus will be on promoting extended producer responsibility for beverage containers and electronic waste. Other possible areas of focus include corporate compliance with supply chain labor rights codes of conduct and environmental health issues. Consult our website for more detailed information on these program areas. The job has the potential to develop into a senior level position for the right person.

Skills Sought:

  • Demonstrated skill in research and report writing, preferably with strong quantitative skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and phone skills for phone and in-person interviews noted above.
  • Aptitude for or interest in learning to confidently conduct negotiations with senior officials of focus companies.
  • Personal commitment to progressive social and environmental change.
  • High comfort level with databases, online interfaces and basic web design a plus.

Additional Responsibilities:

The associate may also be asked to contribute to the following activities:

  • Assist in building coalitions of concerned investors in focus companies to support our issues.
  • Publicize our work among socially responsible investors and in the media.
  • Educate and seek the support of major institutional investors on our core issues.
  • Edit and update our web site.
  • Assist in fund-raising efforts by contributing to development of grant proposals.

Much of our work is done in collaboration with socially responsible investment groups; there will be significant interaction with these colleagues. This position is located at our office in San Francisco, California. We offer health coverage and benefits. Salary: Negotiable depending upon experience.
