As You Sow Planting Seeds For Social Change

Waste

Our Waste Program advocates for more responsible production and recycling of consumer products and packaging to preserve the Earth's limited natural resources. We want to reduce and then eliminate waste, especially in the post-consumer phase through adoption by companies of extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies.

We engage companies in the beverage, consumer packaging, and electronics sectors to move them towards more responsible practices emphasizing:

  • Maximizing the efficiency and productivity of all resources used
  • Adopting extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies
  • Quantifiable efforts to eliminate waste
  • Responsible disposal and recycling practices at the end of a product's useful life

There are hopeful signs of progress and As You Sow plays a leadership role moving corporations towards greater responsibility for the materials they produce.

2014 Agenda

2014 Company Engagements

In 2014, we have filed shareholder proposals with the following companies:

You can find all our 2014 waste resolutions on our resolutions table.

2013 Accomplishments

We filed new shareholder proposals with Whole Foods Market and re-filed proposals with Mondelez International (former Kraft Inc.) and grocer Kroger.

We pursued dialogues with several many other CPG companies including Clorox, Colgate-Palmolive, and Unilever. We also pursued dialogues with several major food/beverage companies asking on-site packaging recycling.

We filed a proposal with YUM! Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut) and have active dialogues with container recycling including McDonald's and YUM! Brands. We are asking these brands to at least match Starbucks' commitment to recycle plastic and paper cups left in its stores.

On electronic waste, we expanded our focus in 2013. In addition to re-filing a proposal with Target Corp., we had new filings at Amazon.com and Walmart, asking these companies to match Best Buy's industry-leading free in-store take back of end-of-life electronics.
