On January 24, 2013, Procter & Gamble, the world’s largest consumer products company, settled a lawsuit filed by As You Sow to enforce California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act (Proposition 65).

As You Sow brought the suit against P&G for selling laundry detergents, including Tide, containing the carcinogenic chemical 1,4-dioxane without giving consumers a legally required warning that the products contain cancer-causing chemicals.

Seeking to protect children and other consumers from exposure, As You Sow brought the lawsuit against P&G. After several months of negotiation, the company agreed to go beyond the legal requirements and reformulate their laundry detergent products.

By September 2013, reformulated laundry products should be available nationwide with levels of 1,4-dioxane below the State of California’s No Significant Risk Level.

The company’s move was widely praised by consumers and environmental groups as protecting the health of communities and children in California and across the nation.

As You Sow is also engaging with Procter & Gamble in a shareholder dialogue on the company’s responsibility for post-consumer waste generated by its product packaging.
