Microplastics

Microplastic pollution is one of the most pervasive and least visible consequences of our reliance on synthetic materials. Textiles are the third-largest market for plastic, consuming about 14% of global plastic production. Synthetic fibers make up 63% of all fibers produced worldwide, roughly 80 million tons each year. During manufacturing and wear, these fibers shed microscopic particles that enter waterways, oceans, and even our bodies. Studies suggest the average human brain may contain as much as a plastic spoon’s worth of microplastics overtime.

An estimated 200,000 to 500,000 tons of textile microfibers reach the ocean each year, making apparel a major source of global microplastic pollution.

The European Union Zero Pollution Action Plan has a goal to reduce microplastics released into the environment by 30% by 2030, and regulations are expected soon. To address the harms associated with microplastic pollution and reduce transition costs in the face of emerging regulations, apparel makers need to develop goals to reduce microplastic shedding from their products.

As You Sow is in the initial stages of engaging leading apparel companies to reduce microfiber shedding and increase transparency around progress. Through shareholder advocacy and collaboration, we urge brands to set measurable reduction goals, disclose shedding data, and invest in low-shed materials and cleaner manufacturing technologies.

As regulation and investor expectations grow, innovation and accountability will define the future of sustainable fashion. By uniting science, advocacy, and corporate responsibility, As You Sow promotes solutions that protect ecosystems and strengthen long-term value for companies, investors, and communities alike.
