ExxonMobil today announced an intent to reduce methane emissions by 15% by 2020 and undertake other greenhouse gas reduction measures at refining and chemical manufacturing operations focused on efficiency improvements. This announcement follows a successful shareholder vote of nearly 40% on As You Sow’s 2017 methane resolution with ExxonMobil asking the company to detail plans to curtail its methane emissions.

Danielle Fugere, President of As You Sow, had this to say:

“We commend ExxonMobil for responding to shareholder concerns and following through on the request to set quantitative methane emissions goals. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas; reducing methane emissions from oil & gas operations is critical to maintaining a livable climate on our planet. Exxon’s commitments show progress in the right direction but must continue given significant improvements in methane reduction technologies and the urgent need for the company to reduce its emissions in line with a two degree warming scenario. Exxon’s announcement underscores that the time is now for the oil & gas industry to take bolder action on greenhouse gas emissions or risk falling behind.”
